While researching the terrain of Spitsbergen (Svalbard), satellite imagery reveals itself to be fragmented and inconsistent. Limited data coverage, combined with variations in orbital paths and acquisition times, produces visible artefacts in the images. As a result of the region’s low (economic) priority, vast areas remain inadequately documented.
Printed at large, the layered and composite nature of satellite cartography and that lack of interest in the region becomes apparent.
However, shifting geopolitical interests, melting Arctic ice, and the emergence of new sea-ways suggest for this to change.
